Welcome to ECLIPSE! A new species of beetle has been discovered in the forests of BC. Scientists have been unable to study these beetles in depth, because of a peculiar sensitivity to changes in light. It is known that the beetles react to a solar eclipse, but we are unsure of what new form the beetles take after the reaction. Do you know?
Sometimes it helps to look at what beetles used to do many years ago, and compare that with what beetles do today. Are there any differences? Which differences might be exaggerated in the future? What changes have developed in similar species over time?
Sometimes it seems like evolution has taken a strange leap, because we haven't discovered the full story yet. Do beetles take a strange leap in the future? What kind of environment will exist for beetles of the future? Will they look anything like today's beetles?

The Details:
Curiosity Collider will display the beetles in their first incarnation at: ECLIPSE: TOTAL ALIGNMENT Art and Science Explore the Momentary Darkness Location: H.R. MacMillan Space Centre Vanier Park 1100 Chestnut Street Vancouver, BC Date: 17 August 2017 Time: 6:30 - 10:00 pm Tickets available here! In October, I will review submissions and begin fabrication of the beetles in their new form(s). The finished piece(s), constructed using the winning submission as inspiration, will be displayed at a future Curiosity Collider event. I need your help imagining what these beetles will look like after the eclipse. Draw your idea of how this species of beetles will look, and think about why they evolved that way. Then submit your idea! |
